Have to say, Stadler are producing some really smart looking trains right now.

The extra trains will support increased frequencies as part of the "Metro Flow" project, which will see the dualling of three single-line sections on the South Shields line between Pelaw and Bede, the last such sections remaining on the network. The adjacent freight line will be electrified and made capable of carrying Metro trains. www.nexus.org.uk/metro-flow

Will the first of these trains still arrive in 2023?

The new Stadler units for Tyne & Wear metro are taking shape. The trains by Stadler appear to be built quickly but it is interesting that we are still yet to see the Class 777 Stadler or Glasgow Underground enter service. link to tweetlink to article

Reviving this thread as the first Stadler class 555 unit for Tyne & Wear Metro has completed its first successful test runs on the Metro network. The first test run was an early morning run between South Gosforth (where the Depot is located) and Monkseaton, stopping at stations en-route.
It will be some months before passengers will be able to ride on a 555 unit, as an extensive programme of testing and driver training needs to take place.
The 46 units, which are being built in Switzerland, are articulated and have longitudinal seating. This layout is new for Tyne & Wear Metro but will be familiar to many users of London Overground and Underground.
