One of the class 483 former Underground '38 stock trains operating the Island Line on the Isle of Wight has been secured for preservation. The London Transport Traction Group was formed to acquire one of the units after South Western Railway invited offers to preserve them. The unit will probably be available for collection in March. The plan is to house the unit on the Epping & Ongar Railway, and for it to be battery powered so it can operate in service without needing to be attached to a locomotive. First though the train will need to be transported from the IoW and restored, which will take money, and the LTTG has started a fundraising campaign. SWR has told the LTTG that the unit offered will probably be 483 006 or 483 008, both of which are still operational.
