So you want to become a bus driver? Here's some useful information for you - this is the way I did it. It may differ if you apply to a company as a trainee.
The first three things you'll need are:
1/. A full UK (manual or auto) car licence - Category B. Some companies will take you with an automatic car licence but this will depend on operational requirements.
2/. DVLA form D2 "Application for a driving licence for a lorry, minibus or bus"
3/. DVLA "Medical Report Form" D4
***The D4 can be downloaded here. The D2 has to be ordered from DVLA by following the same links on the same website***
Got these? Great! The next thing you'll need to do is arrange for a medical. This doesn't have to be your own GP - there are companies around that will handle the driver medical for a fee. Your own GP will charge for this service but on the plus side, your GP knows your medical history. I must point out that there are certain medical conditions that will prevent your application being accepted by the DVLA. The standard for a Group 2 licence (LGV/PCV) can be found by clicking here, and could save you money.
Meet the standard and had your medical? Great! Now for the D2. Fill out all the required information, making sure it's accurate. In the section that asks which provisional entitlement you would like, tick the boxes for both C & D. The standards required are the same and should you decide later that you want to do your LGV then you won't have to go through this again to add the provisional entitlement. Sign it, enclose your D4 and send it all of to DVLA. Your licence should return within 2-3 weeks.
Once it's all back you can start on the road to learning to drive a bus!
