As part of European legislation (EU Directive 2003/59/EC) since 10 September 2009 it has been a requirement for all LGV or PCV drivers to either hold or work towards a Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (DCPC). Depending on when you acquired your C/D licence determines whether you had to do initial CPC or period training. For the purposes of this thread, I will detail the process for new drivers - initial CPC.
Initial driver CPC is made up of 5 modules.
1a) The driving theory test
1b) The Hazard Perception test
2) CPC case studies test
***Modules 1a/b and 2 are taken at the same testing centre. You can choose to do all 3 on the same day but that decision is yours!***
3) The practical driving test
4) Practical Non-Driving test
PLEASE NOTE: You will not receive your driver qualification card until ALL 5 initial CPC modules have been completed.
You must carry your driver qualification card with you at ALL TIMES when driving professionally.
Once you have your card, you must complete 35 hours of periodic training over 5 years in order to maintain the qualification. If you work for most bus companies, this training is done in house normally at the rate of one a year. If you complete 35 hours of periodic training before your current card expires, then the hours will be "banked" and will count towards your new card.
An officer from the DVSA (formally VOSA) can ask to see your card at any time. Not carrying the card when working professionally or failing to produce it to a police or DVSA officer when requested is an offence and you risk a fine of up to £1000.
