Let’s be honest the option picked for the Sutton loop was the most poorly thought out option. I’m so happy it’s not happening, I can sleep a little easier knowing there won’t be a tram thundering past my window past midnight for the foreseeable future. I think the Thameslink option to be converted to tram was an excellent idea, given this could always have functioned as an extension to the Croydon network, perhaps as an alternative terminus for the Tramlink? There could have been a “Wimbledon Junction” constructed perhaps with a footbridge connecting it with Wimbledon. I think the Sutton to West Croydon tracks also could have been a good addition to the Tram network. Southern services would have to just divert via Mitcham Junction to get to Central London instead.

In my opinion Option 3 was poorly thought out as cutting across from right before West Sutton to Crown Road isn't feasible. They should've just taken over the Wimbledon - Sutton section from the 'Sutton Loop' with additional stops at Reigate Avenue and Collingwood Road. For the Wimbledon terminus, they could've extended Platform 9 northwards to allow for a tram and a 8 car class 700 to fit with an appropriate safety buffer inbetween. For the Sutton terminus, they could've constructed a site similar to Mitcham in terms of having a long access ramp from Bridge Road Westwards to connect with a new end platform that would use part of the tracks parallel with Grove Road. Frequency of 6 tph would only require about 5 units Thameslink would continue to operate between Wimbledon & St Albans/Luton and Sutton & St Alban/Luton via Mitcham Eastfields

And what about people in Carshalton, Wallington & Waddon who now lose their direct London service? It’s not as simple as divert services via Mitcham Junction especially when both Southern and Thameslink services operate via that route

I've wondered about that before but I'm not sure, could have an additional stop at Plough Lane and possibly elsewhere and whilst a more frequent service could be provided it would be with smaller trams and what happens at West Croydon? I don't think there is capacity for more trams on the town centre loop without causing more congestion thus delaying buses. If it ever did happen I'm pretty sure the X26/SL7 would be withdrawn between West Croydon and Sutton.

Thinking about it if it joined the existing Tramlink network at Reeves Corner like the Wimbledon line does then the New Addington service could be rerouted to Sutton. The problem then is that there would be no service around the loop from George Street and Church Street to West Croydon and no service from West Croydon to Sutton just as there is no Wimbledon service from there.
