The latest entry on the Leon Daniels blog features a visit to BYD in Shenzhen. They are the firm building the two "electric" buses for Red Arrow services. Although the London vehicles are not built yet there are photos of similar buses in service in Shenzhen. leondaniels.blogspot.co.uk/2013/03/electric-city.htmlPosted for interest.

It was meant to be this summer, Although If they haven't even been built yet then they better get busy soon ;D
Interesting stuff though, Still not sure fully electric buses are the way we should be going though.

Oh yes, They are definitely a positive. I just hope we don't become dependent on them when there's other ways.
For example, Flywheel Technology if developed further could prove very successful.

Volvo has announced they are also moving into building electric buses There is also some articles on the euro6 engines and weight reduction (see the press releases of 23rd) Some indication as to the direction Volvo bus is going is in the report dated 25th www.volvobuses.com/bus/global/en-gb/newsmedia/pressreleases/Pages/pressleleases.aspxThe hybrid articulated and another press release includes a statement that all Volvo low floor single deckers will be hybrid from 2014. More relevant to London is the Euro6 engines press release that says Volvo will increase the power on the smallest engine (the 5 litre used in hybrids and double deckers) to 240bhp. For those who are always talking torque, instead of bhp, its rating is 950Nm. At the end of the article are links to further spec details The

Snowman you mean for those who are always talking torque like myself, it should be instead of lb ft not bhp, anyway so torque is up from 663 to 700lb ft hmmm still doesnt seem that sufficient unless the bus weighs under 11, 000kgs imo

Loving the play on words (positive, as in electricity) The BYD buses look decent, I just hope the tech is robust enough for London's tough environment. Would they put charging points at each terminus (i.e Waterloo and Victoria)? It's nice to see our recent Travelcard price hike financed Leon to go on a jaunt to Australia and China ;D TFL are spending out alot, but some of it could be better thought out

I believe whether they are positive or not for the environment depends entirely upon the time of the day that you charge them. Peak bad, middle of the day = good.

How does the time of day affect whether the charging is good for the environment?
