Yes we finally get a night route. Just a shame it’s not going further to Uxbridge which would have been even more useful. I was kinda expecting an extension of the N97 to up here.

I think you mean N7 and not N97. No I mean the N97 to provide the Uxbridge branch of the Piccadilly Line with a night service. Extending the N97 to Uxbridge via N266 to Acton, N207 to Ealing Common, Hanger Lane, Alperton, route 487 to South Harrow, 398 to Ruislip and U1 to Uxbridge.

I am overall supportive (although live on the other end of London!). Maybe this is a temporary number to start with and they may have some other final number Would an N114 be too off the chart? I think this may be the start of a new night network. The number fits in with the pattern of the N550/551 and I wouldn’t be surprised if we eventually see the N5, N20 and N97 renumbered with in the 5 series to fit. Seems to fit with temp routes now being numbered in the 700 series instead of 500 as they used to be. I don't think it's that - the N550 & 551 were only numbered as such because of the relevance to the route they replaced which was the N50 and this seems to be a similar case with the N518 which seems to be renumbering the N18 journeys that run between Sudbury & Harrow Road and Trafalgar Square. Recently, a N271 was introduced which would contradict any renumbering scheme involving 500 series routes.

Smart proposal in terms of how the N18 and N518 timetables will be coordinated over the common section. I’m not sure about the routing to Ruislip though. What TfL seem to be saying is that the 487/398 corridor has strong enough night bus demand for such a service. It’s been decades since I lived in that neck of the woods. Perhaps someone local like COBO can comment on 487 and 398 loadings in the very late evenings. I would have thought something mirroring a night tube routing to Ruislip would be better used: from Sudbury Town route 92 to Whitton Avenue, right turn into Whitton Avenue West, 487 LOR to South Harrow, 398 LOR to Ruislip. A slight tweak to the proposed LOR, but overall this helps to fill a huge gap in the night bus and tube network.

So the N18 will be withdrawn and replaced with this? It will running alongside it. If N518 exists, why can’t N18 slightly be rerouted by going through Warren Street, Tottenham Court Road and Leicester Square to get to Trafalgar Square. This would make the N18 follow the day 18 bus a bit more and allow people to make from Regent Street make more use of N518 instead of N18.

They might as well make a day 518 to run alongside the 18. Possibly ending it at Wembley Central. I agree, maybe from Kings Cross to Wembley Central? I was even thinking if 18 should have an express bus due to how long it is and how packed it can get.

Wouldn't be better 518 be daytime route assist 18. TFL need to do something now 18 on the press.

The N18 shorts to Sudbury will end once the N518 is introduced. Because the new night route is intended to relieve the N18, the N518 has to follow its sister route from Wembley until Trafalgar Square. Currently the N18 is bulging until Wembley out of town and Oxford Circus into town, so sending the N518 via Warren Street will see the N18 oversubscribed. The N518 is there to alleviate the N18 first and to provide night coverage in Sudbury Hill, Rayners Lane, Eastcote and Ruislip second.

8 new bus stops to be built, only served by night buses. That’s quite a novelty especially in such a suburban area, I imagine that people will grumble they would prefer a bus service during the day rather than one in the middle of the night.
Also the capital cost for those new bus stops seems quite high for what is effectively an experiment. If patronage is less than expected beyond Northolt Park then that money will have been wasted. I’d prefer a slightly more cautious approach with the new night bus service being routed via existing daytime routes or simply operating express over the currently unserved sections of road until demand for the service is proven.

I agree that this is a positive change. My comments on two issues mentioned:
The numbering: N518 will be fine. If TfL were really hellbent on removing all 5xx routes, including N5xx routes, then it could have taken the number N318 or N418. I doubt either will ever get a night service and are sufficiently far away to ensure they are not confused.
The contracts: It will probably be introduced in December when the 18 comes up for retender, with it being contracted separately. Happy to be proven wrong though!

As someone pointed out further up the thread, it seems sensible to extend this route to Uxbridge, then it would mirror the Metropolitan Line to some degree.
